Sadly the rack is showing back up today after the third attempt by Phoenix to center it. A real PITA as I kept assuming it was my imagination that it was off and the tie rod adjustment range would easily fix it so put it back on the car ...
The Phoenix guys do generally seem to know what they're doing but sure did not center it properly the last two times. They do pressure test and did have to re-sleeve it the first time to fix it leaking. That would probably have been a fail if I was doing it.
Everything with the rack is nasty and dirty.
For anyone else doing this - on an airbag car I found it much easier to remove the bolster and the nut for the shaft length adjustment and you can pull the lower part of the shaft right off with the rack bolted in place. The lower shaft part on its own is great when you are under the car to recenter the rack without any risk of mangling the splines.
The Hex length adjuster does have a key so you cannot (safely) use it to "fix" an off center rack.
If Phoenix have it still wrong I may just give up and do the centering myself. They promised to have an adult do it this time!
This has been extremely frustrating with the car down for a couple of months.
