You are almost guaranteed to find severely worn out pinion and carrier bearings in there (and all the other bearings too). Check the mating numbers on the ring and pinion gears, it's always possible that someone installed a mismatched set and the dimensions were out of spec. I've had units with a broken ring gear and intact pinion and a desperate person might throw the pumpkin from a different transmission, maybe one with a wasted ring gear, in such a unit just to stay on the road.
