One thing I noticed in your post is the brake pedal pressure changing with the RPMS. The only link between the engine and the brake system is in the brake booster which is connected to your intake manifold. It uses the engine's pressure in the manifold to help your braking out. Just push on the brake pedal as you start the car and you should definatly feel the pedal move closer to the floor.
If it is changing with your rpms(it shouldn't), then the leak must be somewhere around there. Off the manifold is a 3-way T connecter which has the brake booster, the turbo guage, and fuel pressure regulator (i think)
IMHO, lack of a Cat converter won't effect your engine pressure in the intake side... I have no idea about the heat control problem...
