for the longitudinal mounting was a simple matter of fitting the engine w/o widening the engine bay. This according to the book: "Saab - A Half Century of Acheivement", Dove Press.
Another tidbit: unlike the Taunus engine it was derived from, the saab engine/block was machined to lie at an angle so as to allow space for the transmission while still keeping both the center of mass and the hood line as low as possible. That's how we got that beautiful view of the hood curvature seemingly dropping out of sight when driving.
