1986 900 Turbo... check engine light... air mass meter dead?

Got a solid check engine light. Engine runs terribly; no power, turbo spools up, but boost gauge won't go positive. Bentley says the only cause of check engine light on my model is air mass meter failure.
First test is to run engine to normal temp, rev to 2500 RPM, then turn off. In 4 seconds, the hot wire goes thru a self cleaning cycle and you can see it glow. It didn't glow.
Second is to inspect wire in meter. It is intact.
Third is to detect voltage between terminals 1,4. Look for rise to 4 volts after shutting engine off following another 2500 RPM spin. Saw none.
Fourth test is to look for battery voltage between terminals 2,4. Got exactly that.
At this point, all that remains is to look for wiring breaks between air mass meter & LH control unit, and to check operation of system relay.
Here are the questions....
If I get voltage between 2 and 4 per the fourth test, does that prove the system relay is working?
Is it even possible that a piece of wire has opened a circuit?
What is the liklihood that the LH control unit has croaked?
Is there another way of testing the air mass meter? Why aren't there any descriptions for measuring the resistance of the hot wire?
Surely someone has been here before. Thanks for your help.
