Just read about the check engine light in my Bently's manual. This is what it says:
"As a general rule, a steady check-engine light means the LH control unit has detected a fault."

There is then a page and a half table of possible problems the LH control unit might detect. You need a special fault-code reader which is basically a switch to ground. Using this tester, the check engine light will pulse a code to indicate the problem that set it off.

If you don't have a Bently's manual, I suggest you get one. They are full of good info that is helpful even if you never do any work yourself - they are great for interpreting what a mechanic tells you.
