I don't know about the tolerance issue, but most say it is because the EP additives somehow "bond" to the bearing surfaces. Motor oil has detergent additives which wash off these deposits, which run through your transmisson and wreck the bearings. Just changing gear oil to gear oil SHOULDN'T have this effect, although Saab itself says to be careful about changing gear oil, becasue it too can do this. See townsendimports.com for a more detailed explanation. I say your dambed if you do, dambed if you don't. But if you tranny has 196K on it, your problems are likely just caused from old age. When and if you get it rebuilt, put regular old motor oil in there, or possibly Amsoil 20w-50. I know everyone raves about MTL, but the guys at Townsend Imports actually don't have such great things to say about it. And they work on Saabs day in and day out.
