1. Go to a local dealer/service center that has the BG44K purge machine...it dumps the old crap and runs a solvent solution through the P/S system, then refills the system with ATF and BG44K power steering system additive. Costs about $100, has been profiled on Goss' Garage and Motorweek.
2. Carefully remove the power steering reservoir from the car; you'll have to unbolt it and move it outboard enough to reveal the hose clamps, take them off, and take the hoses off the reservoir. On old 900's, chances are the reservoir nipples are very brittle and you may in all likelihood break one, which will necessitate either a new reservoir from the dealer or a trip to the junkyard (I went to the local junkyard). Clean the reservoir of all the crap that has accumulated in it...on mine the crap was about halfway up the outlet from the reservoir (the bottom nipple) so that could account for some restricted flow! The important point here is that the top line is the pressure line. Reconnect the now clean reservoir to the bottom line/bottom nipple, and plug the top nipple. Put the top line into an empty gallon jug and fill the reservoir with clean synthetic ATF (eventually you're going to go to synthetic ATF...you can start now with syn atf or flush with conventional atf and then go to synthetic if you're really anal), start the motor/idle it, and keep pouring new synthetic atf into the reservoir (pour fast!) until the stuff coming into the gallon jug either fills the jug or turns clean...believe me, it takes less than 30 seconds! Shut off the engine quickly because it will make a mess when the jug overfills.
Hook up the pressure line to the reservoir and you're done.
PS...this is essentially the procedure for the automatic transmission, except you're supposed to drop the pan and clean the pan and replace the filter first.
