If the brake light stayed on right after you started it, which was probably the case. This happens when the ignition switch gets gunked up, the key does not return on it's own from the start position, back to the run position. If your starter survived and nothing got damaged from the overheating, you can probably put it back together, top off and bleed the cooling system. Be sure to also check the positive battery cable, which runs directly to the started, with all that current running through it for so long, the insulation have have melted and clean the ignition switch too.
