Sounds like you need to rebuild your brake master cylinder. All it is is just a plunger in a tube which pushes fluid, just like a hypodermic syringe, except a bit more complex since it pushes fluid through more than one port. There are little rubber rings on the piston which seal against the cylinder walls, and when those rings rupture or go bad, fluid can get around them. When that happens, pushing the plunger doesn't pump pressure down to your brakes. You can either buy a kit to rebuild your MC (it has replacement seals and rings) or you can buy a rebuilt (or new) MC and replace the whole thing. Rebuild kits are cheap, but replacement units are easier.
Don't drive around without fixing this problem! Eventually you'll need your brakes and won't have them. Also, remember in a panic that you can grab the handbrake if you need extra braking power.
