coils are essentially long torsion bars wound up in a spiral...if you shorten a torsion bar the spring rate goes up.
But you're right..it wouldn't stiffen the spring enough to make up for the decrease in suspension travel...you probably need about 30% stiffness increase and you're not willing to take 3-4 inches off the spring height!
Some people have sawed about 1/2 to 3/4" off the bump stops which helps...at least you don't bang the stop as quickly.
Replacement springs are the way to go.
