Please Help! Dipped Beam problem...

The car in question is a 1985 900T 16V.
At some time in the cars past someone fitted the 1988> headlights, bumpers and grill.
The problem I have is that after approximately five minutes of night time driving my dipped beam will fail, and only comes on again after frantic flashing of main beam or turning the lights switch on the dash on and off.
To give an actual example of the problem, tonight I was driving along a very dark road with full beam on. I had been driving for around ten minutes at this point and the whole time main beam was on. No problems atall!
On sighting a car coming towards me I dipped my headlights only to find that dipped beam did not exist any more. I switched main beam back on, no problem, then attempted to dip the headlights again; same story: no light. After another two flashes of main beam, dipped beam returned, and stayed on for about ten seconds. By this time I had obviously pulled over!
For the rest of the limp home it was the same story: No problem with full beam, but dipped beam was only intermittent.
Can someone please guide me in the right direction as to where to start tackling this problem please, as it has left my car un-drivable (at night time anyway!!).
Thanks in advance.
