Crankshaft Oil Seals and Saab special tools

I bought my 83 900 turbo off the want ads a couple of weeks ago. Great car to drive, but it’s responsible for the largest oil spill since the Exxon Valdiz. Small ones seem to be coming from the turbo oil line and the general area of the flywheel. Big one is at the other end (fire wall end) of the engine in the area of the oil pump. I'll be pulling the engine to deal with these rather than fight all of the clearance problems. Fixing most potential leaks seem to be straightforward. Bentley manual is a big help but specifies a procedure I have never seen on any other engines. Manual says to use Saab special tools to center the openings of the oil pump and the front plate around the ends of the crankshaft in order to ensure the respective seals are centered over the crankshaft ends when the seals are installed.
My question: Is the use of these tools really necessary or can I just replace the seals and bolt the components together. If they are necessary, where are good places to buy or rent them? Is it common practice to take the engine block to a Saab shop or a machine shop to have this part of the job done? Any advice or benefits of experience appreciated.
