I have an '86 900 that I just had my father replace the radiator in. The original had finally rotted through. After replacing the radiator we could not get the cooling fans to come on and it couldn't be driven more than a few miles without getting hot. I talked to my brother and asked him and a friend to look at it and they cleaned some of the relays and tinkered with switches within the cooling system and miraculously they came back on. Sadly it was too late for me to enjoy my SAAB - my parents said that too many things need to be fixed (only the cosmetics now) and went out and bought me a PINK (ugh!) 2-seater geo metro convertible. What an anemic little car. Now my bro's driving the SAAB and I think we just might have another convert. My brother's email is night8320@aol.com if you want to find out exactly what he did to fix the '86.
