There are good ones and bad ones. If an OG 900 has made it *this* far, It was most likely one of the good ones. Therfore, the sample that the joker who wrote that book is using for his data is invalid.
Undoubtedly, because one you buy now will have lots of miles, you will have to fix things that are worn - ball joints, clutch parts, brakes, e-brake cables, not to mention tune-up parts. So be aware that it won't be like driving a new car off the lot.
As an example, on the '89 900T (99k miles) that I bought last year, I have replaced all of the vacuum hoses, rubber vacuum grommets, one drive axle, front motor mount, water pump, muffler hangers, valve cover gasket, AC hoses, and a bunch of tune-up parts. I expect that it will need a fuel pressure regulator and a few other goodies in the upcoming year. But to me, it's worth it. BTW, it *is* my daily driver, so, if something goes (like it did with my last one - due to some ... um ... custom bodywork) I'm SOL.
I think that many of the reliability problems have been due to 3rd-party things like engine control computers and a lack of think-it-through diagnostic abilities of some of the dealers' service departments.
I do suggest that, if you buy an OG 900, you learn to do your own work. You'll save a lot of money and, other than getting really greasy and losing skin on some knuckles, it's fun and relatively easy to work on. Not to mention that, here on SAABnet, there is an enormous wealth of knowledge on how to keep these beauties running.
