Turbo?
88 have the improved brake calipers. I've had an 83 900 and can tell you the newer ones are much easier to deal with, plus you get to miss out on the "thunk" sound when you back up.
If a turbo, 88 and on get watercooled as well, a nice bonus. Also a few HP increase.
Biggest issue for you should be maintenance history of both vehicles. I would opt for the Saab with a better maintenance record and which appeared more meticulous. Check for rust, check for repaint (I prefer original paint in good condition), and most importantly, take it to a Saab mechanic. Well worth your time! For example, I recently almost purchased a 88 TC with airflow kit. All appeared ok to me. As it turned out, one of the cylinders was a less than 50% compression, nice leak coming between the engine and the transmission and lots of other "surprises" wich my mechanic found. Would of cost me close to $3,000.00 to have it fixed properly!
Good luck,
Boris
