I'm in the process of doing one right now.('87 900T Conv.)
All I can tell you is don't bother trying to skip any parts removal, you'll spend twice the time, and end up removing things anyway.
Best bet seems to be follow the book exactly, and a few good reads of the Townsend sight for good measure.
I was told that the head could be removed without removal of the exhaust manifold from the turbo, but couldn't manage it myself.I figure that "shortcut" cost me over an hour alone.
Just take your time, and you'll probably do just fine.
Nuts and bolts only turn left or right(unless of course they break or strip)
