alternator diagnosis. Mom's '88 just lost the alternator bearings at 125,000 miles (201,168 km- there's that calculator again!) and I've heard this is typical for an alternator to fart out in one way or another around this mileage. The following assumes your battery is fully charged (for the time being...)
Disconnect the battery (remember to code the radio when you're done) and remove the alternator's voltage regulator. Be sure the brushes are long enough, and I don't have the spec handy, so that's up to you. The regulator is attatched to the non-firewall side of the alt. with two screws. It probably says Bosch on it somewhere or another.
An aftermarket alternator will cost between $175 and $250 if you're lucky. Thank you Robert Bosch.
Should the lights dim seriously and the fan slow down and ..., turn off all the electrical goodies you can and try to limp it home. You will have between 5 and 15 miles before she's dead, Jim.
