Use the correct size tool for the bolt. Use decent quality tools, they fit better, and are less likey to round off the bolt.
If possible, use flat-drive sockets, ones which apply the force to the flats, rather than the corners (eg. Metrinch).
Make sure that your socket/Torx bit is sitting firmly and squarely on the bolt. Take your time in positioning the tool and finding the best angle.
If it is a really tight bolt, spray a generous amount of penetrating oil in there (my favourite is PlusGas), and give it time to seep in.
Rounded bolts can sometimes be removed using flat-drive sockets. If not, I usually weld on an old bolt and use that to grip onto.
