The center vent *always* blows cool (outside) air - it has never blown hot air in it's life. If you don't want the cool air, you can turn that vent off; I like the fresh air because it keeps me from getting sleepy on long night drives. Don't worry, there are at least 4 locations where heat comes out when the floor heat is selected (the plain down arrow). If all else fails, just tell'em "It's a Swedish thing, you'll like it!"
As for the dash defrost vent, take the speaker grill out (two phillps screws, need really short screwdriver; also is a spring clip on the underside you must depress, it's gripping the underside of the grill opening. Now with the grill off, you'll see a corrugated plastic or paper tube about 2.5" diameter. This connects the lower air duct to the speaker grill vent - make sure it's connected properly, if not the air won't get to it's destination. Upon reassembly, poking a screwdriver through the speaker grill vent will help you align the corrugated tube again - it's a little tricky at first.
