John, thanks for the reply. When I bought the car the previous owner had the fuel pump replaced, and the car reeked of gas. I finally traced it to the fuel pump (after taking the entire tank filler spout out of the car & finding nothing). There was a large puddle of gas on top of the fuel pump which was caused by a mis-installed Oring. I bought a new Oring from the local dealer and reinstalled it all, which fixed the gas fume problem. However the car before and after still cranks long & hard before starting.
I noticed the fuel pump was quite large, and never did really get it all the way out of the tank. Now to the question, which is where is this PRE pump you refer to. It is implied this is before the pump, IE down at the bottom of the in-tank pump. I noted the funky Oringed 90 degree fittings which were held on the top of the pump cover, held by a keeper screw or 2.
Where also is this check valve you and others described? I only recall seeing the black plastic lines leaving the fuel pump cover and going away under the floor boards.
Finally, is there a place on or near the fuel rail to check pressure just before the injectors? I looked for one and saw nothing. BUICK for example has a schrader type fitting on the rail for this purpose of verifying the correct pressure near the injectors (they also have a test lead to jumper so you can check it under the hood). Do SAAB's have this type jumper?
Thanks in advance,
DET
