Jak,
I have the same situation. My reverse gear was in pretty bad shape. I found a used gear from a local SAAB repair shop, with some chips, for $40. Two of the teeth are chipped about 25 % of the way back, several other teeth have lessor chips. Wish I had a better gear, but this was the best I could find in short notice. I used a dremel grinder to round off the chipped areas. I did this to reduce the possibility that the weakened, chipped areas will break off. I also used the Dremel to deburr all the engagement teeth on the gears and syncro ring teeth. (The dremel kit cost me $79, with a bunch of acessories)
If you just have very minor chips, you should be fine if you touch them up as I did. Reverse gear damage occurs during engagement. If you keep this in mind, and shift accordingly, no further damage should occur. Don't hurry the shift into reverse. Hold the clutch down a few moments longer, to give the gears time to stop rotating. Several SAABers even shift into first before engaging reverse.
You should also perform the reverse gear modification as described on the Townsend site. This will increase the tooth engagement depth, and better spread the load on the individual tooth.
I think you'll be fine, but the $200 may be worth if for you just for the peace of mind...
Not an expert, just a hobbiest...
