I'd appreciate any posts or e-mails with advice. I have a '92 SAAB 900 Turbo S, known in UK and Australia as 'Aero', but better known in USA as 'SPG'. It's been modified to produce 230+ bhp AT THE WHEELS! Has a balanced engine, SPG9 Stage 2 modified APC, RRFPR, T3/T4 Hybrid Garrett Roller-bearing turbo and 3" exhaust with hi-flo CC. Recently replaced failed 3-speed automatic transmission with 5-speed gearbox from a '90 SAAB 900 Turbo (not quite the same model). With minimal further tuning/development, this car could readily reach 250+ bhp at the wheels. HOWEVER, the 5-speed gearbox isn't coping with the power output!! It's developing differential backlash and with increasing regularity pops out of 3rd gear (into nuetral) when coming off acceleration (to coast before changing to 4th). Now, I know that years ago SAAB to to race these OG900's in European rallies. They were developing far greater pressure on gearboxes than I would be. Planning to remove gearbox and dis-assemble for inspection (possible part replacement). Does anybody have any suggestions as to how I might 'strengthen' the gearbox so this problem doesn't recurr? Truly, I'd be grateful to receive all thoughts and opinions from this most learned audience.
