I don't have any answers to your questions, really, but am in the same boat. I have an '88 9kt that I'm getting ready to do an install on.
All I can contribute at this point is that SaabGuard alarms until '92 or so are fundementally compatible. You have to use one from a hardtop car, however, as the convertible ones are different. Still, I would certainly buy aftermarket - you can absolutely get them cheaper than $100. A decent alarm that'll probably last 3-5 years shouldn't run more than $80, and possibly as little as $50... I buy my stuff from Sound Conceptions, but you should have no problem matching their prices elsewhere online...
