Car starts immediately with jump but not on its own...

Hi,
I had my car jumped--it started right off the bat, didn't need to wait. I then let the car idle and rev'ed it for about 10 minutes. The volt meter on the dash registered 13.2. After turning off the car I tried to start it again, but it wouldn't start. I heard the alternator(?) clicking. On the next attempt the dash lights barely lit up and no sounds from the engine.
So, being completely clueless, my questions are:
1. Was the problem that I didn't drive the car around for a while, instead of letting it idle?
2. Wasn't the 13.2 volt reading on the dash an indicator that my battery wasn't really dead? If so, what could the problems be? The battery leads are clean and well connected.
A new alternator was put on last summer.
Thanks,
-Eric
