Are you sure it's not just the valve cover? '86s and '87s had a more square valve cover; the later cars had a slanting one like a c900. Many people (myself included) swap the earlier square ones for the later slanted ones as the later ones also had a much thicker gasket less prone to leaking... Due to the way the engine sits in a 9000, it couldn't really be mounted at a different angle, or there would be pretty substantial negative effects on the drivetrain...
