When the ABS kicks in, the pedal will move down a fraction of an inch, and you'll feel a rapid pulsing in the pedal. You may or may not hear the pulsing.
The best way to feel it is to find a nice, open, WET parking lot, and nail the brakes. I say wet, because the grip of modern cars and good tires is so high that in the dry, you'll have to brake so hard to get the ABS to kick in, you'll probably not notice the ABS with all the other forces. Find some wet pavement, and hit the brakes as hard as you can. That's the difficult part - most people find it very hard to really nail the brakes. Just screw up your courage and press the pedal as hard as you can. You won't break anything.
Good luck!
