The 9000 uses the ZF 4HP18 transmission. This was a very early 4-speed FWD lockup transmission from ZF, and isn't terribly reliable. The only other car I know of that uses it is the Alfa Romeo 164/168 series car. They have similar problems, FWIW. Many, many cars use ZF transmissions, but only these two use the 4HP18 - to the best of my knowledge. There is a version of this transmission that some Volvos use and they are equally unreliable... I think that may be the 4HP22, but don't quote me on that. If your girlfriend has a non-turbo 740, I'd keep my eye on it. The 740Ts got the Aisin-Warner AW71, which is a very solid unit, and tends to be very reliable.
