Summer's going good. Josh found this awesome Saab mechanic in Vermont. His name is Paul and he has a warehouse full of used saab parts and a fleet of donor cars. You can get more info by checking him out under the "our current sponsors" link on the home page. It's about an hour and a half ride from Amherst through some nice twisty mountain rodes.
And the shifter?
First I found a nice leather hurst shift knob to replace the factory one.
Then I cut a little off of the shifter lever so that the knob would sit at factory height.
Then I removed the shift lever assembly.
Next I removed the pin that holds the shift lever into the sleeve on the shifter bearing.
I slid the rod down half an inch and redrilled and reinserted the pin.
So now there was half an inch more rod below the pivot point and half an inch less above.
I then spaced the bearing assembly one half inch away from the body of the car with some stacks of washers.
Next I put everthing back together.
The result is much (about 40%) shorter shifts. The feel is stiffer and more direct.
With out the reverse lock out the 4 to 5 shift can be tricky, but if you want it would be possible to retain the lock out mechanism by cut some material out from the middle of the mechaism and reattaching it.
I hope this helps, let me know if you have any Questions?
Chad
