discharge of the turbo to the intercooler and the intercooler to the throttle body. I'd bet that one of them popped off or split.
At 137k miles, there should be lots of life left in the car, and the only things I can think of that would give you the afterburner syndrome are (in order of expense from low to high) are turbo ducting boots, ducts, and fuel pressure regulator. Unless the ECU went south - but then it would just stop running without any pyrotechnics.
