The stuff I see in the parts stores around here is Valvoline. It is labeled as 'synthetic Dot3/4', but technically isn't all brake fluid synthetic? It is clearly labeled Dot 3/4 which SHOULD mean that it is Dot4 fluid. It'd have to be to be compatible with Dot4 which is a boil point rating higher than Dot3. Dot 4 works just fine in a system which has Dot3 fluid in it, it just will not be ALL Dot4 in the system and the BP would be closer to that of Dot3. IMO, if they just labeled it Dot4 and stated on the label that Dot4 supercedes Dot3 and is completely compatible with it, they would be better off. YMMV. For the record I still go to NAPA and get a bottle clearly labeled Dot4. To me and many others, synthetic brake fluid means silicone brake fluid, at least colloquially, which is actually Dot5 which is incompatible with Dot3,4, and new Dot5.1! I would not try to convert to Dot5 as it may not be compatible with the seals in the brake system and it is definitely more compressible than Dot4 which could affect ABS operation. The advantage of Dot5 is that it does not wick moisture. But, any moisture in the system will lay at the low points as well. FWIR if you REALLY want to go to Dot5, you need to start with a NEW, dry system from end to end.
