Have you verified that both fans come on when the a/c is started? Usually, 9Ks tend to run hot because the fan switch temperature setting is high. But with the a/c on, the fans should run. The thermostat gets a clean bill of health, since the temperature stays in the middle until the a/c is turned on. Or so it seems.
The starting difficulty is a battery or loose connection problem. The difference between a hot engine compartment and a cooler one is just enough to push the the problem into affecting the starting. Come winter, I predict it won't start - period.
