Sorry, my '87 has not that sensor, so I don't know where it's located. But any other on this board can answer this question. I'd look for it on the trans side of the crank, because it has to read the teeth of the starter gear.
It really doesn't sound to me like a cooling system related issue.
Checking the plugs is always a worth thing, because they live in the engine and they know what happens.
