How loose can a CV joint be?

I've been chasing a rumble in the front end of my '93 CDEt (180K) for almost 20,000 miles now. When I pulled the left axle out to replace a tri-pod bearing that seemed loose (but wasn't) I noticed that the CV joint has a little (maybe .002" to .005") backlash. It's tight in the axial & radial directions, just loose when rotated. The joint doesn't click on tight turns.
Are CV joints preloaded? Could this small amount of play cause a drum roll/rumble in the floorboards and steering wheel at 65-85 mph, or should I look somewhere else? It doesn't howl like a wheel bearing. I've heard that the joint between the intermediate shaft and the splines of the right side driver can wear and loosen up. What are the symptoms of this failure mode?
Thanks in advance,
Garret
