Well, there's a number of suppliers of reprogrammed T5's for the
9000. Hirsch (Swiss) is Saab certified. I had MapTun (Swedish)
do mine and am very pleased with the results. There's also other
Swedish tuners: Stromqvist, Nordic, BSR, etc. Abbott (UK) does
'tuning', but unlike the Swedish tuners, Abbott removes the APC/
knock control, as designed by Saab. The Swedes do their tuning
by reprogramming fuel and ignition mappings - solely through
software and memory changes in the microcontroller. With Abbott,
the wastegate actuator is changed and the basic boost level is
raised, considerably. Raising the basic boost narrows the threshold
by which the APC functions - I wouldn't recommend that set-up to
anyone.
Now, before you run out and get 'chipped', I'd strongly recommend
you to change the downpipe and cat', to something larger (3"), first.
The larger downpipe and cat' will decrease the amount of
backpressure (quicker turbo response) and will also lower the
temperature of exhaust gases. Your engine will be operating
under much 'nicer' conditions during 'normal' driving and at the
extreme, i.e., WOT.
One last thing, '97 was the last year the Aero was made. The seats
are truly a work of art - hell, the whole vehicle is pretty artsy! The
Aero is the epitome of understated Scandinavian design and the B234R is the pinnacle of turbo charging as applied to internal
combustion. The B234R, having the MHI turbo and the T5 Trionic,
has much more potential for 'tuning' than any other 9000 or any
other Saab, period.......you guessed it, my opinion is don't walk,
run to the Aero!
