My own 9k (1995 2.3 LPT, 5sp CS) has undergone two changes of appetite lately. Previously it gave 22 to 28 mpg in the best and worst circumstances. After the head gasket blew and I had the head milled and reinstalled, I saw a big increase in economy. From Colorado Springs to Denver (a net drop of 1000 feet), I recorded 38 mpg while maintaining 55-70 mph in rain. Mixed suburban driving yeilded 26 mpg readouts. Then I noticed the 10-inch crack that had laid open the pipe between the mid- and rear muffler like the hull of the Titanic. I had Meineke weld in a connecting pipe, and mileage dropped back to what I'd seen before. And darn it's quiet! But I enjoyed those economy runs. Can anyone explain this? Does the rear muffler normally have enough back pressure to account for a 4 mpg difference? Or was it the rain, providing water injection? We haven't seen that stuff in a long, long while.
