Oil Filter Bypass Help Needed - Wrong plug

In a fit of stupidity I unscrewed the big plug next to the oil filter. The spring and another (very important, I'll wager) bit sprung into the catch pan. I've put it back in with the pointy end of the important bit going towards the engine, the spring and then the cover/plug. BEFORE I crank it up can someone tell me if the pointy end does, indeed, go up? There was not a great amount of tension on the spring in this way but everything fit.
Thanks and you can all have a good laugh on me.
