I called my parts dealer guy (Mike at Kachina Saab) today asking about a used DI cassette I saw advertised, trying to determine its build date, and he gave me some interesting info. He said that he can get "test" DI cassettes from the third-party that provides them to Saab dealers, for <$100 to individuals (probably around $80) with no limitations.

He says these units are not new but rebuilt by a third party (Kent-Moore Tools) and are painted blue, not the usual red (or black as in newer cars). We've all heard of these blue "test" cassettes used by dealers, but until now I didn't know anything about their origin. This obviously may be a good avenue for those of us replacing faulty DI cassettes. I don't know any more than what I'm presenting here, but Mike says some of the machanics there have used them on their personal cars without problems.

My only concern is whether or not they retain individual coils that may check out okay even if they're old, which means they wouldn't last as long as replacements, or whether all coils are new. As I understand it, the coils are the only part of the DIC that fails in time, so if the coils are replaced in the rebuilding process this could be a boon to end users.

There are still questions to be answered here. Mike at Kachina is checking on the coil-replacement question and will be getting back to me tomorrow. In the interim, I'd like to know if anyone has heard of this option, and if so if there is a history we can glean from. What seems to be certain now is that they are available and are <1/3 the price of a new, discounted DI cassette.
