there is something to be said for 'one owner, dealer maintained, all service records' kinds of cars. Old Porsches that have been dealer maintained and have all their service records, for instance, are worth 2x a car that has no service history.
Saabs can and often do have a troubled past by the time they hit 100k. The thing I am most cautious of is problems relative to the belt and belt tensioner. Throw the belts off and bad things happen unless the driver shuts the car off instantly. Warped heads, melted chain tensioners can run up $2k in damages easily.
Another thing I am noticing is that the bottom is falling out of the used car market, at least here in California. Dealer incentives (Mistubishi will now pay you $50 per month until 2004 to take one of their cars) are pushing the price of used cars through the floor.
My 16 year old son, a walking database of Porsches for sale within 50 miles, can site mid-range used Porsches that have dropped $10,000 in the last 2 weeks.
