What is the extra cable for?

Hi all
I have noticed that there are three cables that act on the throtle housing valve spindle of my 96 2.0LPT auto. The accelerator cable, the kick-down cable and one that runs around to a metal box that is attached to the side of the battery carrier.
Whay is it for??
