I don't know about the hi-lo switch realy, but I saw that all the current that the buld was taking was passing through the column switch, the one you move when you move the lever. Since there was too much current in there for such an old switch, the tabs were frying and getting so hot that no more current passed from there, and the headlights dindn't worked no more.
Now the only current that crosses the switch is the one needed by the relay, less than a part of an Ampere. The switch is much happier because it has less current to manage, and it causes no losses to the voltage giong to the bulbs (I think this is what Lu means when he talks about distances, losses are like a distance).
I'm sorry that I didn't explained well the first time.
