If clean 5 speed Aeros could be purchased for the price of even the coveted 164S, then that's what I would seek out. I know of the 164's reputation for poor reliability but I would never suspect it based on the experience I had with my '86 Spider Veloce back in the early 90's. I work 200 yards from a well respected Alfa Indy who just happens to have performed all of the work done on this 164S over the last 10 years. As a matter of fact they just did the timing belt/tensioner/water pump/valve adjustment and recently installed new rotors, pads, exhaust, radiator, and A/C compressor. I talked with the shop owner and he said maintenance on the car was all set for the next 40k.
I have some time to decide. After all the contemplating I'm still finding myself a bit attached to the ol'CDE.
