Don't know why you need to remove the alternator or the alternator brcket to remove the upper mount. The alternator is attached to the bracket with only one bolt (the bottom bolt). The top one only needs to be loosened. The alternator is actually hooked on to the top bolt. Don't think you can remove the top bolt all the way either, unless you remove the whole drivetrain. The car body is in the way with the engine in place.
