Is the compressor clutch engaging (is the middle of the clutch spinning)? Has the system been converted to r134a? Is the problem that the system is not cooling well? Is the mechanic saying the pressures look right and the car should be cooling?

If the problem is that it's not cooling well enough, I would first check to make sure that the air mixture flap in the blower motor housing is still attached to the rod arm and the flap moves as it should. You could be getting air heated by the heater core mixing with the ac cooled air. If that's not a problem, I would ask to have the system evacuated and filled with exactly 2 pounds of r134a.

It is usually cheaper to pay experts at a higher rate for less time than to pay a lower rate for the average Joe to muddle through. You may be best served by finding a real ac specialist.
