Do Oxygen sensors ever go bad without OBD-II throwing a CEL? All of my 9000s are near 100k and all are running on the original O2 sensors.

The gas mileage is slightly off on the 96 and the inside of the pipe is slightly blacker than the rest. Also, there is a slight backfire when I gun it in neutral. Sort of adds up to running slightly rich.

I've swapped FPRs, ECUs and the inlet air temp sensor measures 1000 ohms. Plugs look fine. The trionic has never been shy about CELs, and as a replacment pair of O2 sensors is expensive even at eeuroparts I thought I'd ask around.
