It would not hurt anything, but even taking it off, because of the number and surface area of the turbine fins you won't be able to fully drain all of the dirty fluid and sediment. It's more effective to fill and drain the system a few times during normal operation to flush out the system. If you do decide remove the converter, it would be a VERY GOOD idea to replace the front transmission oil seal. Make sure that the new is seated properly when you install it - flushand square with the front flange surface. Be very careful to pull the converter straight out (a couple of long bolts screwed into two of the mounting ears works well) and when you reinstall it so that you don't damage the soft metal shell oil pump bearing/bushing. I used a canvas web strap to hold the coverter in place when I reinstalled mine. I removed the strap when I was sure the converter was seated properly and there was about 1/4 space between the engine plate and the bell housing.
