I called two shops in my area about replacing my burned up A/C compressor and doing a 134a conversion. Both refused to convert my '88 9kt to 134a. They said they would only use R-12 in my system even though it's about $30/lb. Puzzled at this I then sent an email to Pat Goss from the "Motorweek" TV show. I'm posting his response simply for another view on the subject. It appears many of you are very happy with your 134a conversions so you can take it for what it's worth:
Hi Chuck:
In the past I did convert vehicles to 134-A but I only did it according to
the IMACA guidelines. That made the conversion quite expensive but they all
worked great without long-term problems. However it has been three years
since I've done a 134 conversion because I've found that the LEGAL
substitutes do as good a job at less that half the cost. I use nothing but
R-406-A.
Good Luck!
