Have not had any problem yet on my two '95s, but he has told me that it can be a problem. Particularily with the early balance shafts systems. I think that he just pulls the chain and leaves the sprockets in place. He feels the balance shaft is not necessary to smooth running.
If you are thinking of doing this, I'd yank it before failure. I honestly don't know what is involved, but would guess just yanking the valve cover may be enough. Then you could replace the Timing Chain guide in there as Ari has suggested in the past. Would think that would take care of much of your noise.
Dump the car? Oh no, you've still got 2/3 of it's life left.
I'd stick to 10w40 for the Summer, unless you are going on a big trip, then perhaps 15w50 would be OK for constant high speed driving.
