The later model B234's benefit from 6-7 years refinement/improvement. Doesn't matter which B234 either, as they're all the same, internally. Ideally, you should get a low-mileage LPT, one that probably has been pretty much babied, and build/add the performance, as necessary. The post-'93 model transaxles are superior, and the same that I said about the engines applies to the '97 & '98 transaxles, as well. So, I guess my first choice would be a '98 B234R (standard transaxle). This comes with a Mitsu' TD04 and is easy to tune to 300 hp. Next would be any '97 B234 turbo. You can easily upgrade the Garrett turbos to a ball bearing unit, or even a TD04, maybe an 18 compressor? George makes a good point regarding OBDII, which first appeared in '96. My third choice would be any '94 or '95 B234
engine/transaxle. The 2 litre engine is not an engine I would consider as a project - there's simply not enough choices for tuning/software. I'd wager that the cost/hp for a 2.3 vs 2.0 would be much lower, too.
