AC aux cooling fan -- replace? resistor? Posted by John Fitzgerald [Email] (#77) [Profile/Gallery] (more from John Fitzgerald) on Tue, 10 Jun 2003 07:57:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Regarding the AC aux cooling fan: first, it looks like I'll be replacing at least one (if not two) of these fans on the 'fleet': the 97 CSE T (131k) is inop (won't work, even going straight to the battery) and I'm getting a high voltage drain on the 97 Aero whenever the ACC kicks the compressor and fans on (it's the aux fan causing a .7v to 1.1v drop each time it cycles). The question is this: after looking in the archives of this BB, it looks like there are two ways to get the aux fan out: through the top, taking off the headlights and cross brace ass'y, or down the bottom, removing the spoiler and whatever else is in the way on the way down. I'd like to hear from those who've done it as to opinions on which way is best & least likely to result in any DIY damage on the way. [btw, neither my Haynes nor the factory 9000 manuals, dated 1986, seem to address this procedure -- perhaps this is because the second fan isn't installed in markets other than the USA, with it's heat stress index of stop & go traffic, high humidity, and the usual summer temps in most of the country?]
Second, the fan causing the volt drop/high drain: is there a replaceable resistor on the fan, similar to the two speed radiator fan, that might be the culprit? I've cleaned the electrical connections, both on the relays & the connectors in line, but the drop persists. I suppose it might be the motor going bad, but I'm hoping for a less expensive fix. Any ideas?
Thanks
